i experienced that as a fact, my gf (not my gf then) cut her hair right after a break up, i think it is one's expression or subconsciously it means a big change in one's life , and one's hair before the breakup would seem to be a reminder of a failed relationship, which can be traumatic or need not remembered thats why one needs to have a change either of the hair cut, hair color, or new look, so it means change... i also experienced that but not with hair but with my environment, like u change careers, u change ur contact numbers and throw all those old stuffs which mite remind you of the breakup.
it symbolizes moving on...

I think everyone wants a new start after a break up. Some people cut their hair, others change location and some decide to buy a new car. There is such a feeling of emptiness when a break up occurs, there has to be something to grasp onto, that gives you hope.

I dont know if people tend to do that but it could be an effort to start over. Another reason is people tend to feel better after a hair cut.

I had long hair once, very nice and shiney!!! Oh yea the girls loved it. After a relationship is over, you dont feel the need to impress the one who you were with before so you just whack it off. You say to yourself "ya this stuff is a pain in the "butt" and im sick and tired of washingit and conditioning it everyday, it leaves me with acne on my forhead and make me sweat alot". So you evaluate your options to keep or not to keep? You say ahh it'll grow back this winter when i need the extra insulation to keep my head warm from the cold, off to the hair cutters you go! Long hair is dominant and shows power! Like Indians! When they got scalped they were ashamed and thought they were little boys... I think??!!? I may be wrong... Probably am... well whatever! If it feels good then do it! Have it your way and go to burger king!

It's a symbol of a new beginning. Especially if the cut off of any relationship was negative... a way of cleansing, change, moving on. Cutting one's ties from a job termination, relationship, etc. in putting your best foot forward and making a change in a new direction.

Celebrating independency by cutting the hair. Ex BF want it long when you were together. Cutting=freedom at last!

Because ending a relationships signals a change in one's life. Most people (normally girls) want a new look to go with that change. It's just part of our genetic makeup.

To make themselves feel better, to look good and ready to get on with life and attracting others. They also tend to lose weight and get new clothes and make other changes, sometimes extreme changes, in their lives.

I have found that as a woman, when I can not change my weight, finances, or just about anything, I know I CAN change my hair. It is the one thing I am mostly able to control.
