Looks to me that Bush is teetering on an acceptance of the fact that the US military is stretched far too thin as it is. Not only that I really believe that he is afraid of further military action albeit his further rhetoric that the US "reserves all options to defend our friends in the region." (China has a HUGE military, much larger than the US. Why would they need the US?)
Pres. Bush called Wednesday for stiff sanctions on North Korea for its reported nuclear test. In a Rose Garden news conference, Bush said the United States "reserves all options to defend our friends in the region, and .
"remains committed to diplomacy. He also said that the "United States has "no intention of attacking" the reclusive regime."It didn't work in the past. ... I learned a lesson from that. You have a better diplomatic hand with others sending the message," Bush said.
He supports a resumption of six-way talks among North Korea, South Korea, China, Russia, Japan and the United States.

It's not fear. North Korea has dynamite, not nukes. Besides, they don't have anything we want. I'm pretty sure that by "our friends in the region" he was actually talking about Japan, who isn't allowed to maintain a standing army by the treaty we made them sign at the end of WWII. China is NK's best friend, so they have no worries.

I would hope and pray that President Bush would use every means available to avoid a military confrontation with any country. The fact that we have not been physically attacked by N Korea is a plus and if we can defuse the situation and reach a verifiable settlement I'm all for it. War should be the last resort of any confrontation. North Korea's threats and actions have pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war and if they attack look for the draft to be imposed. I don't know if China needs a big glass parking lot to its east or not but South Korea could use the space. N. Korea has neither the resourses or population to sustain a war without Chinese or Russian help and what we have is a regime that has been coddled and assisted by two countries that do not like us.

I got the same impression, that he came really close to saying or at least thinking, the answer to that question was "because we don't have any available troops or military funding because of Iraq!"...you could almost see it on his face. Not that I want him to attack NK or think he should, but that's just the impression I got from the news conference. I was wondering also, what were those diplomatic efforts he was talking about in Iraq? "Resolution after resolution..." what was he talking about? I don't remember...were they sanctions or warnings or something? If so I'm not sure I would call that "diplomatic." Diplomacy in my book involves sitting down and talking to them.

Bush has finally realised that noone is ready to support his WOT anymore, everyday his list of supporters grows thinner and thinner,(no surprise there), The one thing I hate about him at his PC's are the way he blows off a serious subject by making lame jokes to which people are forced to react (i mean people havent come to see your show)...Whats up with his attitude? when Nkorea told that it would create Nukes He did nothing...but when Iran is telling again and again that It wants to enrich uranium for power generation he seems intent on stopping them...The lesson here is that stand-up to a bully andhe's helpless...shutup and follow without questioning is helpless and stupid...
