I am retired military, I have my BA in psychology, my MA in higher education administration, completed an internship in the career office of a local university and was a division & department career counselor while in the Navy - I have applied for about 400 positions over the past 2 years and have had interviews but no offers. The only thing I have been told is that someone with more experience was hired - how can I get the experience? Can anyone give me some ideas, I have run out of them. Thanks.

If you've applied to about 400 positions, and haven't gotten any offers, then maybe you should look into becoming something other than a career advisor...

Take another job in a college or university. An Academic Counselor/Advisor may be a good way to get your foot in the door. You would be working with students and usually can take courses at the institution free or at a reduced rate. Some of these for profit colleges highly recruit for Enrollment Counselors/Recruiters. You should try those positions also. The for profit institutions do not have Career Counseling depts, but you will get higher education experience that would look good on your resume.

Ok - this is the field that you want to go into and you have experience in it - what would you tell someone in your position to do? Seems like you may be losing it in the interview. Saying that someone has more experience can be a polite rejection, rather than being blunt and telling you what they really think.

I have no doubt that you have the skills to figure this out on your own. Best of luck to you!
