Indian films are eligible to win an Oscar in the Foreign Film category. They need to be nominated by the Academy of Motion Pictures. This is a panel of people who are involved in Hollywood productions, giving out an award based on American standards. It is not the be-all and end-all of film production. America does have an edge over other countries in that it manages to make A LOT of money in the movie industry and has an efficient way to get it's movies exported and shown around the world. But that doesn't mean that Hollywood makes the best films. You can see that even some of the big players in Hollywood are moving / have moved toward independent films and filmakers (Sundance Film Festival is the most well-known) and for world wide acclaim you really should consider the Cannes Film Festival rather than the Academy Awards (Oscar).

buddy what are oscars??
i dont understand is that a mark??
is that a criteria to judge moviesdo think that movies that win oscars are alays so nice??
buddy dont judge the movies just by award
u know BLACK was even much more then oscar winner
RDB is also too good to win oscars but it wont win.
there is a lot of politics and bribery is goin on around
and if still its genuine in its giving away the award then still its not necessary that these awards the mark or criteria to judgge any movie.
there are lot of mivies in india.......
different languages
different topics
different duration
but all doesnt make up to oscars. do they??
so stop judging the movies by oscars or any other awards.
enjoy the movie
and judge according to yourself
or by the story
by its screenplay
by the work of actors
by the work of other participents
by its music
by its direction
by cinematography
oscars of screen awards or filmfares or national awards are mot the criteria to judge that so and so movie is good or so and so movie is bad......
and Specially the comments of my previous one.....
cant the movies show what is goin around in the villages and remote places and tribes.......
thats a major way to convey message.
i strongly disagree with the guy above me ECQC

The most harmful elements in Indian films are the songs, dances, item numbers etc. The producers, directors, music directors and actors become ones out of inheritance and not because of talents. In Indian filmdom, there are ‘groups’ of these professionals based on stakes, cast, religion, linguistic background etc. Even big businessmen and politicians are members of such groups.
We have never seen a filmmaker going around the country and survey for finding out an appropriate actor for a particular character say for ‘Ashok the Great”.
People might have seen films on Ashok… how were they.
Indian films cannot win Oscars unless these flaws are not uprooted.

No not yet. Indian movies should first be made fit for all Indians and second for the westerners to make them universal in concept. How many of the world audience would understand the man in the movie who sits under a banyan tree with a small brass vessel for him to spit at regular intervals. He presides over a gathering in which he hammers out a verdict that four well grown male loafers in the village would legally rape a woman victim for the simple fault that the woman belonged to a 'scheduled tribe' community and dared to get water from a well which was the upper caste's belonging. Oscar would be the next century dream.

indian movie making is an art form in itself.... i'm from california, the home of the oscars, and the reason most ppl i know love hindi movies is precisely because of the song/dance and the "sentiment". Most of the world, especially US has become so desensitized to sex and violece, that the simple innocence of a hindi movie heroine or the chivalry of the hero who doesnt touch the heroine before marriage is something to marvel at. It gives them hope that there are good people in this world.... i've known many americans who wish to marry indians precisely because of the image they've got from movies...
that said, you're right in saying that most indiam movies are copies... Black was an amazingly made movie, too bad "The Miracle Worker" already won 2 oscars... But when our directors set their minds to it, they can make award worthy movies as is proved by lagaan.... its not that Lagaan is not oscar worthy, its just that "No Man's Land" was better..... it would have been different ahd it been made a year earlier...
Other notable Indian movies that at least i believe are original... Bombay, Devdas, Company, Guru.... and i'm sure many more that were'nt commercial hits in india itself... and my favourite.... Kaalapani...
Intense emotion is something we exel at :)

Oscar is a committee which is looking for excellence in a particular field. So, excellence is country independant. So, there is no mean in saying Indian films are not fit for oscars.we have almost gone to take oscar with LAGAAN.but we did not loose due to lack of excellence but due to the complex tiltle which jury could not understand or relate to.So,Emilie took the
oscar.so,indian films can win oscars

ya.. surely..
lot of indian directors are making gr8888 movies..
u thought like that because 80% of movies are commercial and action.. senti genre.. only 20% or even less come in this category..
even in hollywood most of the movies are action.. senti.. romantic.. love genre.. the condition is similiar there.. but the thing is ppl out of america dont know about the lot of films.. like those which didnt work at the box office. we will know only about the movies which work at box office or which has high expectations.. so ppl may think that hollywood is making lot of good movies.. but the condition is same in bollywood and hollywood.. only thing is we were not aware of their flops... we were very much aware of our flops.. thats it..
