The Heysel Stadium disaster occurred due to football hooliganism in which a retaining wall of the Heysel Stadium in Brussels collapsed on May 29, 1985 during a football match between Liverpool F.C. from England and Juventus FC from Italy. 39 people were killed, mostly Italian Juventus fans. The match was the final of the 1985 European Cup tournament.

About an hour before the scheduled kick-off time, Liverpool fans breached a fence separating the two groups of supporters and charged. Juventus fans were forced to retreat, putting pressure on a dilapidated wall, which collapsed on top of them. The game was played despite the disaster. Liverpool were later banned from all European competitions for six years and all other English clubs were banned for five years.

The disaster has been called "the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions.

Yup I remember it well unfortunately. I was 9 years old, watching it live on TV. Was prolly too young to understand it at the time, but the impact was far reaching in terms of stadium safety and design. Scary thing was, it came only weeks after the fire at Valley Parade, home of Bradford City FC another tragedy.

Sadly they are the dark side of going to a football match and which, hopefully in future will never happen again.

We do rememeber Heysel, on the talk board I regular, on the aniversary. It replaced right into a dismal night in our historic previous. Justice replaced into considered, in spite of the fact that small in scale, to be achieved however, prosecutions have been further against followers. Justice has in no way been achieved for HIllsborough and consequently we nevertheless campaign. If justice replaced into achieved in Heysel however, why have been no Italian followers arrested? A small minority (very like the case for Liverpool followers) rioted for the time of with police. And in case you definitely need to connect those 2 subjects, Liverpool FC objected to the two grounds getting used, nervous approximately secure practices subjects in the two circumstances.

Yes I remember watching it on TV news, a real tragedy. Football hooliganism is an extension of innate tribalism and social fragmentation from loss of social control caused by the financial/power class system. I think they should bring back the two years military conscription.

I also remember the Munich air crash (1958?) tragedy, that wiped out much of Manchester Utd's star team.
