Here is a web site that I found that list's different units from World War ll. Once you get on this page scroll close to the bottom for a list called "Unit histories". You can follow the different links to get more information about the units involved with this war.

When I was looking for my father in laws unit, I put the specific division in the search. he was in the Tank destroyer force in the 8th army, so that's what I put in the search. I got several specific units. it you know the exact unit division put it in the search field. So when I found the Unit# I put it all in the search field and got several hits.
