I covered this with some of my students recently and some very good points were brought up by the class:

A few brought up the idea of cloning Einstein, but then others brought up the idea of cloning Hitler. Then a debate ensued as to who would have the rights for cloning, who could decide who gets to be cloned and who doesn't?

Some of the children stated that it would be a great idea to clone someone because you have 'spare' parts if there's something wrong with you. So is it moral to kill the clone to harvest the heart to save the original person???

What about just cloning parts of humans? This has been proposed also, but what about the fact that cloned specimens have a shorter life span??

All in all I believe that cloning could be a good idea but it needs to be researched soooooo much more first and very strict guidelines would have to be enforced worldwide.

Cloning is an important development in the scientific field. The same method used in cloning (somatic nuclear transplant) is used for stem cell therapy although only cells with the same DNA as the donor is derived, not an actual clone. Even as a scientist I believe that cloning a human would be immoral, albeit very interesting.

But don't lose any sleep about cloning, it'll be a long time until anyone even thinks about cloning a human. The method is far from perfect, has a VERY low success rate, and clones such as dolly are born old because of the telomeres on the DNA.

I think that cloning will revolutionize medical practice if they can figure out how to clone and rapidly mature organs or limbs without actually cloning and maturing a whole person. Imagine the opportunities if you could clone an organ for someone instead of wait for a transplant.

The costs of cloning, compared to the traditional method of creating offspring, will probably make cloning people, pets, etc a niche market anyway - why pay $100,000 for a clone when you can just have sex and deliver a baby for a few thousand?

I think its ok as in cloning genes as in the Genome project but cloning people and animals just doesnt seen right. I know it can help a lot of people but one day they are going to take it way to far and then they wont be able to stop and soon there will be clones every where and people just wont be unique to themselves anymore because there will be some one else who looks exactly like them. What Im trying to say is that in most cases i dont think cloning is alright.

Ignoring the moral implications clones have shorter life spans than the original and all sorts of health problems due to exisiting DNA damage.

Also if you are talking about human cloning then it brings up all sorts of issues about peoples rights to individuality (does a parent have the right to clone a dead child) what about the clones legal rights etc.

Having said that it is also true that cloning and growing organs would for example lead to a greater quality of life for people waiting for transplants, do we have a right to deny them this?

In reality -

The cloning we can do now - no problems when it comes to animals. However for humans - the one issue I can think of is DNA comparison for determining guilt/innocence...regardless of the difference of age between the original and clone... any guilty verdict that has come to that due to DNA evidence must be thrown out due to the fact that it could have been the other's DNA...

In sci-fi/fantasy -

All cloning would be excellent except for the following:

1) when my clone commits a crime and I'm blamed for it
2) when my slave-clone rebels against me
3) when my clone tricks other people into thinking it's me!

:)

I think it could be useful if done correctly but if it is done wrong what would happen? I'm not sure it should be done on humans though for safety reasons and rights. I mean what if some one is cloned for a transplant, shouldn't the clone have rights, what would they be able to do?

I think cloning is useful and valuable to the advance of science. But it should not be carried out on humans as this brings in ethical issues.

i think it is a wonderful SCIENTIFIC development, however, it is morally wrong to clone, and i for one am quite scared by the possibilities of it. however, if for example my son needed an op and the only way to get him help would be by using cloned material, i would go for it, so im kind of in two minds on this one. sorry!

cloning might be very good bcoz:
1.childlessness is no more a problem
2.illnesses could be heal
3.you could replace your died beloved
4.if there`s a partial cloning(only clones organ)
5.prevent famine
cloning would be a very bad idea bcoz:
1.cost more money
2.the clones might be misused/mistreated
3.how if they clone terrorist?
4.there`s no more unique created human (man are created uniquely by God with their own charachteristics, cloning would remove that)

hope this would help : )
