I don't know why your wife would say that they are dangerous..
Anything that helps you clean your baby, is a wonder...And then
you can throw it away...If she's afraid of the smell, they have fragrance free wipes, they also have wipes with aloe...mothers want the best for there first child...good luck, and God Bless your wonderful new baby...

I don't see them as dangerous at all! For newborns (less then a few weeks old) they aren't recommended because of the possibility of an allergic reaction, but other than that I've never seen any warnings against them. We've been using Huggies Extra Sensitive Baby Wipes on our daughter since she was about a month old. We've never had any problems with them and she's 9 months old now. We've even gone through a case of BJ's store brand wipes with no adverse reactions from the baby.
In short, I think your wife is being a bit too cautious here, but if she has a huge problem with store bought baby wipes, she can always make her own! There are a few recipes for home made baby wipes on the net, I've posted a couple of links below. It doesn't look too difficult or time consuming and she can choose what she puts into the mixture.
You could also just use wash clothes and rinse and wash them just like you would clothe diapers.
Good luck!

Commercial baby wipes usually don't use any alcohol anymore, which isn't dangerous unless you eat one, but can be very drying on sensitive baby skin. They do often use chemicals and preservatives, though. I don't see any immediate danger in them, but the longterm effects of exposure in combination with all the other chemicals, dyes, and preservatives we're exposed to in everyday life haven't been thoroughly evaluated.
There are some commercial brands that use only natural/proven safe ingredients. Tushies and Seventh Generation come to mind. I like the Tushies brand because the package lists not only the ingredients, but the purpose for each of them -- and I can pronounce every single one. ;-)
You can also make or buy your own re-usable wipes, which is the most gentle option for your baby's skin, is the least expensive choice over time, and is better for the environment. I've gotten some on EBay and at a baby boutique, and have made my own, just using soft cotton fabric and a serger to hem the edges.
Fill a little spray bottle with water, a glug of extra virgin olive oil (a skin moisturizer), and a few drops of tea tree or lavender essential oil (both have antibacterial properties to prevent diaper rash and they smell good). Spray that on the wipe (or presoak them when you're going out) and you're good to go. Throw them in the wash just like anything else, the hot water and any regular detergent will clean and sterilize them for next time.

I don't know why they would be dangerous. However, I have a "recipe" for homemade wipes. Get microwave safe paper towels (they need to advertise that they are specifically for use in the microwave...this makes them thicker, softer, and more durable). I have tried the Viva brand and they are really good. Cut the roll in half so you have 2 smaller rolls. Use an electric knife (like what you use for turkeys) to cut it. I didn't follow the instructions at first and tried a manual knife...it made a mess and the electric knife cuts it like it is butter. Remove the cardboard center. Put the roll in a container and add about a cup or two of water mixed with a tablespoon or 2 of your favorite baby soap. Close the container and let the roll absorb the liquid. You might need to turn the container upside down to let the liquid get evenly distributed. Pull the first wipe from the center of the roll to get it started. Voila! homemade wipes.

Yes they can be dangerous. If you folks are really concerned about this go to a heath food store or online and get the wipes they have there. I bought some diaper area wash when my son had a diaper rash from the health food store and it really did help. The brand is called California Baby and there website is: www.californiababy.com.
One other way that you could stay away from using the regular baby wipes is to use water and unsented tissues. I find that when my son has a bowel movement its easier to wipe him with a dry tissue then to use the wipes.

Not sure what your wife means about dangerous. They're only dangerous if your baby gets a hold of one and chokes on it. Don't leave baby unsupervised and everything will be fine. I like using the Huggies wipes, they're stronger than the Pampers ones, and I also don't like the feel of the Pampers wipes. Greasy? Slimy? Something.

We've been using baby wipes since our girl was a month old (before that just plain water and a washcloth). They are not dangerous in any way. If your baby has sensitive skin they make special care ones. The only bad thing about them is that they contribute to our already overflowing dumps.

Why would they be dangerous? What else will you clean your babies bottom with?
I use the soft Pampers wipes or Huggies wipes. I also use them to clean their faces after eating. They are good for almost anything.
It feels like there is a lotion in the clothe when I touch it. My twins have no rashes or anything when I use them on their bottoms or faces.
The one product I would not use is the Desitin. No this could burn your babies bottom.
Hope this helps you. Here are some other baby rash ointments you can use though:

Not sure about dangerous, but expensive!!! I use cheap washclothes from Wal-Mart. I bought a 20 pack of white ones and I just wet them down when I need one. Washing them is so easy. Throw them in the washer as is, run a rinse load and then wash with a tiny bit of detergent.
Also, I had a friend who used Viva Brand paper towels instead, they are thick and soft and way cheaper than wipes.

Certain chemical combinations in wipes can cause diaper rash. I have to use sensitive or ultra sensitive wipes on my daughter or else just old fashioned soap & water. Otherwise, she gets red and sore and requires an oinment which always seems to sting her and make her cry. If you're worried about wipes, there is no reason why you can't just clean with mild baby soap & warm water. Just make sure you pat the area dry before diapering. I found that sprinkling on corn starch afterwards helsp also.

Been using the cheap Wal-Mart Parents Choice ones since my son was born over 2 years ago. Never had any problems. Wipes are not dangerous. If your child has sensitive skin, there are sensitive skin ones but I've only seen them made by Pampers.
