This is really one guy: Kim Jung Il, and he is a total narcissist. He wants attention.
We're only in danger if he thinks he'll get more attention by starting a war. Hopefully he is sane enough to know that starting a war will be the beginning of his own death.
And narcissists really don't care for death. (Unless they belong to an afterlife death cult like Islam). Personally I'm not that worried about it...yet.
And thank Bill Clinton for giving North Korea nuclear technology. (That amazing fact is never reported in the mainstream media).

There's a lot of theories on this question. I myself believe the theory that N. Korea uses threats as blackmail to receive aid and $ from the rest of the world. They threaten, we give them aid, it's been that way for many years. They also may feel emboldened by the world's intense irritation with the United States and take it further, thinking they will be backed up and praised if they attack. Then there is the common knowledge that the US is strapped militarily, spread so thin we'd need to reinstitute the draft to take a serious fight to Iran or N. Korea. That's no secret, so they make think the timing is right to act out.

The North Koreans know too well that it is only Nukes that countries like America dread and they feel that possessing such weapons will Prevent any attacks from America It is like a drowning man willing to do anything to survive. They did learn a good lesson from the unprovoked attack on Iraq.

I think this leader has fallen off of his rocker. He is playing a dangerous game. The US and 4 other countries are willing to sit down with him and discuss what he wants, but he is being stupid. He will lose.

I think that they want world domination, or at least want people to consider them a larger power. Unfortunately, next to China and the US, they look quite small.

He is trying to call the United States' bluff. he hopes that by threatening us, we will back down and give him what he wants.
Saddam Hussein did the same thing. We all see where he is now.
