If you are talking Mirena......I have it and it has made my periods very light......I have no cramps or PMS. I'm 39 and I'm using it for birth control. Any other questions feel free to email me.

Hi...i had a mirena coil fitted many years ago - it didn't really suit me , but i must admit - periods were actually LIGHTER and LESS PAINFUL , if this is not the case for you - just tell them to whip it out!...give it a try for 3-6 months and if you get on with it then all well and good - contraception AND lighter periods....almost sounds too good to be true!!
I did try a non hormone releasing coil recently - and oh my God....niagra falls eat your heart out!!! (heavy bleeding)
I'm having it taken out soon....the only bonus was no pregnancy scares...but can't suffer the prolonged bleeding any longer......just see what works for you , as i believe the hormone releasing ones do actually make the periods less painful and lighter...its worth a try!

If you know the name of the hormone coil please post it and I can look it up in the reference books for you.
Generally the coil can cause heavier bleeding but it isn't always the case. The only real way to find out is to give it a try. I had an ordinary coil fitted but had to have it removed after just a few months, but my friend has had coils in for over 4 years with absolutely no problems. Its very indiviual how your body reacts to it.

The following quote is about one particular hormone coil but the general principal is the same.

" Initially, changes in the pattern and duration of menstrual bleeding (spotting or prolonged bleeding) are common; endometrial disorders should be ruled out before insertion and the patient should be fully counselled (and provided with a patient information leaflet). Improvement in progestogenic side-effects, such as mastalgia and mood changes, and in the bleeding pattern usually occurs a few months after insertion and bleeding may often become very light or absent. "
