As you can see from list http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Acer_species there are a large number of different species of maple.
Some of them have more spectacular colours than others. For bright colours, species like red maple, Amur maple and sugar maple are probably your best bets. How well they will grow depends on what part of the country you live in.
Determining exactly what colours you will get is not possible, however. There can be considerable variation even with an individual tree depending on what kind of growing conditions it gets, and what the weather is like during the growing season. One year it may produce a whole bunch of blazing reds and oranges, and the next year only yellows.

When you go to the garden center to buy the tree, ask the staff about the fall foliage. Aim for a sugar maple if it will do well in your area.
Understand, however, that even bright colored trees don't always have bright leaves- it is a factor of many things- sunlight, water, general tree health, etc. You can have the same kind of tree in the wrong growing zone and it won't be nearly as pretty.

If you want one that turns red and orange get a "vine maple" they are great and manageable. The don't get huge like a standard maple tree but will often have 3or 4 main trunks. Can't go wrong with a vine maple. They are hardy and can take sun or shade.

Why don't you go out and check the foliage changes and remember the locations of the trees for next year. Then, in the spring, it would be easy to collect a sapling or a sucker off any of the trees to plant where you want.
If you are buying them, ask some people where they have gone.
If a greenhouse company as satisfied them, you probably will get good service too. ASK AROUND.
