The Hall of Fame says that in 1922 the New York Giants received the first World Series ring, but McNeal says the first rings went to the 1920 Cleveland Indians. "From 1931, there has always been a ring offered," McNeal said. "But in the case of the Yankees, they were winning it so often that some of the players said, 'I don't want another ring.' " Awarding rings did not become an annual custom until the St. Louis Cardinals won the series in 1931. This is according to Jerry McNeal, a man whom the Baseball Hall of Fame refers to as a "ringologist."
