I keep reading this term thrown around on music message boards and I never know what it means. Can someone give me an example of a "riff"?

- a riff is a musical phrase - usually memorable - it can be used set the tone of the song or it be used to fill in where the vocals stop.

A "riff" usually is the "instrumental solo"(usually guitar) in between the chorus' in a song. Could also be the long intro into the song itself.

def. "A short rhythmic phrase, especially one that is repeated in improvisation."

It is often the phrase that makes a song immediately recognizable.

Keep in mind that music message boards are often full of users' "own" definitions. Find a good online, music-based dictionary of terms. They are invaluable and you'll never come off as "talking through your hat."

Thanks for asking that particular question. Clearly, it's been a sore spot for me in the past!

A music riff is basically like the word rythm. segments of rythm .just like the begining of the song from metallica "one" at the very beggining of the song with the guitar solo. If someone says wow that metallica song has good riff's in it theyre probably saying it has good rythm. anywas I hope that help you. seya
