Either because they are your friend, and they are as embarassed by the situation as you are, and feel a little resentful that they ever had to ask and that you were able to oblige; or they're not your friend, have got what they wanted and don't want to know.
The first scenario is more difficult to deal with; I can only recommend trying to have an open discussion over a drink or two. The first time I lent a friend a significant amount of money, I was too embarassed to do this, and it took 3 years to get repaid.

Because they don't want to repay you. Don't loan money to anybody, especially a friend. If you do, make it just a small amount (not more than $20) you can forget if he doesn't repay you. If he asks for another loan in the future, just ask right then if you can borrow the same amount he already owes you. Shuts 'em right up every time.

I really wish I knew the answer because I could get thousands back. It seems the more they owe you the further into oblivion they will sink.
I guess they feel guilty that they don't have the money to repay you, and they feel ashamed because they're afraid to tell you the truth?

People are just greedy. At the moment they ask to borrow you some money, they already know they are not going to give it back. It s like they think you know they are not going to give it back, so when you ask it back, you are bothering them. Sorry, next time dont give money to anybody, apart to your real true close friends or members of your family.

because either they cant pay you at the moment or they choose not to even though they have the money .. they act like your bothering them because they know they owe you money and it aggravates them that they haven't payed you yet and u are constantly on their back ..

Remember the saying - - - - I had some money and a friend. I lent the money to the friend. I lost the money and the friend.

I think its they feel guilty but aren't man/woman enough to admit it...I got so sick of feeling like the criminal now with only a few exceptions I don't lend anything...might sound mean but it saves me lots of hassle and feeling bad.
