I start a new job in two weeks and my vacation will be available to me in six months. I have a new baby and my parents are 2,000 miles away and retired. They have not seen her yet. I told them I will try to come in the spring. She said she wants to see the baby more than anything but I should not use my vacation even though it is available to make a good impression at work. How is taking a week off making a bad impression. What do you think?

taking a week of is not a bad idea.because your using your vacation for a very important purpose. at least your not out there wasting your time on nonsence. taking time off for your family is very important. matter of fact family comes first.

When you are new it looks very bad to take time off, unless you have a real emergency such as a death in your immediate family or a major illness.

Can you start your new job one week later and go see your folks between jobs?

If you are talking about waiting until the vacation time is actually available to you and then going I don't see a problem with that.

I would discuss it with my new boss as soon as I started working at the new place, being open and honest with him/her will make a good impression, then the two of you can figure out a slack time with the business that would allow you too leave without putting a huge burden on others.

Thanksgiving is a long weekend use it to visit your parents. My advice, fly on Thanksgiving and return the Saturday night to avoid the travel hassles.
