I tried washing them several times without using softner in the wash or dryer sheets, but they still are so linty and acutally repel water.

Try this...don't use fabric softerner, then hang them outside on a clothes line to dry. I can guarantee, they won't be fluffy after that. It will actually make them kind of "stiff". Hope this works!

Do not use fabric softener. Use a "cheap" detergent. If you really want to go wild,,,,, hang then outside to dry instead of using the dryer.

try changing your detergent and use a new/different softener. My boyfriend towel were the same way and i hated it, so i made him buy new detergent and softner. dont get the cheap stuff, they usually makes the non- absorbent

try washing them in a load with rugged material, like denim jeans.
