Ooooh i know this one! It was on the tv show QI - it's a psychological thing....when someone yawns our mind thinks that there is not enough oxygen in the air and then we yawn ourself to get more! Thats the theory...

I've heard it's a sign of empathy. If you don't yawn when you see someone else yawn you have no connection to them whatsoever.

i understand that yawning means we're not getting enough oxygen and it's a sensible response to yawn as well if a nearby person seems oxygen deprived but how does that cross species? we can make dogs yawn, why?

Did you know that your subconscious can communicate with other life form's subconscious ??
An example is body language. If you work in an environment with a lot of people around.....Pay attention to their posture and their dialogue at the same time.

The theory is because it makes us tired or we feel sympathetic for them, a trigger. But It is because we are not getting enough oxygen to our lungs,..therefore longer breathes...Yawning.
