The answer given in the book comes from the fact he had a butterfly land on his nose, so he tried to blow it off, thus making "pooh, pooh" sounds, hence where his name came from!!

The game Pooh sticks came from the Winnie the Pooh books, as a game that they played on the bridge, the sticks named after winnie himself...

Its now in fact a global sport!!

I do not remember all the details, During World War I, a Canadian military officer volunteered to go to England early on in the war. His one condition was his bear was to accompany him and be provided with suitable quarters. The bear was given accomadations in the London Zoo and Winston was quite a popular attraction, Among those visiting Winston often was A. A. Milne who used Winston as the model for his bear, Winnie. Where the pooh part comes from, I don't know

Tikitorte has it spot on. And the Pooh part came from a swan apparently. Now why a swan would be called Pooh I just don't know.

I have no idea, but that's the best question I've read on here in ages.

He was referred to as a "Pooh Bear", so either he had some unpleasant toilet habits, or he was considered crap at being a bear on account of hanging out with a schoolkid, a pig, a donkey, an owl and a tiger on speed, having mini adventures and talking - rather than standing in rivers catching salmon and stealing picnic food from frightened tourists.... at a guess.

If anyone could actually get there facts right all the characters in winnie the pooh were named after toys that were in a childs room. Christopher robins to be exact. The stories were inspired by christopher, his father made them up as bedtime stories for his son. end of story lol.

I can't remember the soldier's name -- but he wrote stories for his son 'Christopher Robin' about a bear name 'Winnie' which is short for Winnipeg in Manitoba, Canada. . . . . .

During the first World War troops from Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada) were being transported to eastern Canada, on their way overseas to Europe where they should join the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade. When the train stopped at White River, Ontario, a lieutenant called Harry Colebourn bought a small female black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed its mother. He named her 'Winnipeg', after his hometown of Winnipeg, or 'Winnie' for short. etc--see link below

The name "Winnie" was inspired by a pet bear of a Canadian soldier, named after his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

"Pooh", a swan they (Milne and his son) had met on a holiday (who appears in When We Were Very Young).

Well, his name is not: Winnie, the Pooh. So, it isn't that there is a thing called a Pooh. The name is Winnie the Pooh (no comma), so why not ask what 'Winnie' means? It's just a daft name.

What does 'the' mean, anyway? Ok, that's a hard one, let's start with 'a': what does 'a' mean?

Okay............ Winnie the Pooh is not actually a bear.... he's a stuffed animal. He belongs to a young boy named Christopher Robbin. He's a kid...............who else would think of the name Winnie?
