the three wise men followed the stars to find jesus.....it takes three points to produce a complete circle. with only two points you just have a straight line. so there is 2+1 equaling 3, it is representation of all. all the wise men followed the stars (bright lights in the darkness)(those having wisdom) tofind there way to christ, there next step is to follow christ.....what is a diciple but a follower of christ....thou shalt no longer follow after the ways of man for thou has found thy god, and shall stay thy path with me and me only....but that does not mean to not take in things of the world but to allow the winnowing fork to work...allow god to take away what is not true as you study the world with an open mind....work that faith and grow

There are many numbers that repeat in the bible, 40, 7, etc..
Not sure if 12 is one of them, but it could be that they just wanted to use that number.
