Distance Learning is any course or qualification worked on without attending an establishment. You can 'distance learn' by computer or post, and get almost any sort of qualification. they are usually aimed at peole who want to study part-time, whilst raising a family or working full time, and want to either retrain, improve their work skills or study for pleasure. Some distance learning providers based in the UK, who could provide more info, are The Open University and Learn Direct, or most universities have a distance learning scheme if you contact their admissions office.

It means you will be studying a course at a university/college without actually attending lectures, ie. working from home. This therefore means you can still have a job, as you study in your own time, and you can choose any university that offers this method without having to move. So it's similar to Open University really.

The course materials will be sent to you by post and you will have a contact person you can call/email if you have any problems, but you won't necessarily have to go to the college in person.

If there's a course you're interested in I suggest contacting the people running the course and they can tell you more about how their system works, as there may be differences between institutions.

Number one is Open University in the UK, nothing else is even close. In Canada Athabasca in Alberta and Thompson Rivers in BC are okay. In general though, with the big exception of OU, I'd recommend doing distance education through a regular university (one with classrooms) rather than an on-line institution. Good luck.

the phrase gives an impression of "distance from learning".
it is more of virtual learning.
most of the people who want to learn some thing, will find a way of learning from one source or the other.
it is only those who want recognisation (degree?) more for a purpose other than"learning", take a recourse to "distance learning".
I am not casting any aspiration on any body – either the taught or the teacher.

It means you don't actually go into college/university to get taught. All your studying is done at home and you teach yourself with the course materials provided.
