I am self employed, and one of my jobs is working 3 hours a week ( 9.30-11am Mondays and 9.30-11am Wednesdays) for council Adult Education Service. I have been ill the past two weeks and they are requesting a sick note. I understand that this is necessary after 7 days continuous abscence, but does this still apply when I don't work for them in that way? i.e not everyday. I've been/am genuinley sick, so will get a note if I have too, but I resent taking up the Drs valuable time, when the only thing for my illness is painkillers and rest (have flu)

The Golden Rule -- those who pay you the gold make the rules.
You gotta play their game I'm afriad, and only after you've satisified their request can you ask why they do that (in hopes they see it's silly too).

If you are unable to work you can claim back some of your national insurance contributions. Also when you do your tax return if you have incurred any extra expenses you can offset those costs aginst your earnings if you can show that the expenses were necessary to get yourself fit to work or to allow you to work differently. eg essential transport costs if you had to travel using a taxi as you were unable to drive your own car (you are still paying the costs of your car even when sick) As you are unsure on a few things may I suggest you go to your local tax office and collect the leaflet on self employment you might be surprised at what you are entitled to claim.

it isn't necessary and you should check your contract ... you do have a contract, right? If not, then they can not demand anything from you. Of course, they can also fire you with no notice too! But when this happens to me, I ask the doctor for a certificate and he never objects ... he just wants to make sure that it is not for claiming from social security.

Tell them you do not go to the doctor for the flu.
Ask them if they want you to come in anyway, and get everyone else in the office sick.

If they pay you to work for them they have a right to ask for proof of the reason why you are missing work. Just call the doc. They have those things already written up and it will take a minimal amt. of time. I'd want to submit one just to cover my butt.
