I have seen two suggestions: (a) that it comes from the Greek word "monos" meaning "alone" and (b) (less likely) that it comes from the Latin verb monere, to warn! The most famous Monica was the wife of Patricius, a high ranking official in the then important town of Thagaste, in Numidia, North Africa in the 4th century AD. She became celebrated as the mother of St Augustine.
