The famous Irish lore is based on a bit of trickery -- there really is no end to a rainbow. The way the physics work, rainbows are actually full circles -- only the Earth's ground gets in the way of us seeing the complete circle.

One version of the fable is that a leprechaun granted one wish to a couple who was very poor and had little. They asked for riches of gold and silver. The leprechaun was angered that the couple would be so selfish, but as a hint, told them he put their riches in a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and the story goes the couple is still looking for the end of the rainbow to this day.

The pot of gold can only be found at either the end or the beginning of the rainbow, because it depends on where you start looking!

When I was small, there was an end of a rainbow right outside the back door. I spotted the gold, but couldn't go outside in my socks, so by the time I put my wellies, the bloody leprachauns had it in their cart and were away into the bushes.
I always wish I had gone out in my socks, it would have been worth the smack I would have received, as I would have the gold.

I saw a rainbow once that started in the water. I even have a picture of it. The end was at the bottom of the lake. No gold. :(

in the lore I learned a rainbow was a bridge or Pathway between worlds (Heaven/earth Fairyland/earth Valhalla/earth)

if you made it to the other side you would not return

and the pot of gold on this side is fairy gold it will vanish before the setting of the moon. you can ransom it back to a leprechaun for three wishes. but fairy wishes when forced like that very often can have a monkey's paw effect.
