What if the child had an emergency at school? Over the years school shootings have gone up and a cell phone could help the child in school. The student could tell those outside where they are and what the attacker is doing. This could very well aid police in arresting the attacker before anyone is hurt. Another reason is that there is a risk of someone kidnapping a child, and though it is relatively rare it is still possible. Most cell phones have GPS so the police can find the child faster and return the child to their parents. Another good reason is that in case of an accident the child would be able to call 911 faster and therefore potentially save lives. Any lastly (though I have several more in my arsenal) the cell phone would help a child keep in touch with friends and family no matter what they are doing or where they are. This would help if there were a family emergency and the child had to be contacted quickly in order to notify them. For example: My dad recently had a heart attack, upon arriving to the hospital my dads heart stopped and he stopped breathing. My mom was hysterical and in shock and the only person that the hospital could call was me. I was at the mall with some friends and immediatly went to the hospital to console my mom. Because of the hospitals phone call I was able to tell them not to use latex gloves because my dad was allergic to them, therefore preventing further harm. My dad survived the heart attack with no lasting side effects.

It does depend on the age of the kid. Mine just started Jr. High. She'd been pressing us for sometime to have a cell phone but we didn't really see a need for it. Now that she spends more time out, she has one.
We have rules set down on it though. She is allowed to call the 4 people WE put into the phone. My wife, my sister-in-law, my Grandmother-in-law, and myself. She is not allowed to use it for personal phone calls to friends. She is not allowed to give the cell number to ANYONE! If she wants someone to have her phone number, she can give the land line number. We have shown her online how all calls are tracked and that we would know what was going on. Hopefully she won't realize those were outgoing calls and that incomong calls are not logged. I guess if we find she is getting incoming calls we will have to deal with it at that time.
I guess to answer your question, we let her have a cell so that she would be able to call someone in case of an emergency or to let us know that she got to where she was going and that we have access to her at anytime, providing she has a signal.

GREAT Q,,,and I'm sure you'll get MOM answers,,,"SO they can stay in touch"

No offense to MOMS

The issue is more about gaming, playing, and a cell phone for anyone 13 and under is like a walkman and used so often for entertainment rather than,,, "I"M STUCK I NEED A RIDE"

I'm certain I could be burned at the stake for my opinion, but I also offer this.

STATUS SYMBOL, EGO issue, distraction,

"My Dogs, Bigger than Your Dog"

Big Sigh

So sayeth Steven Wolf

incase of an emergency or if they go somewere and need picking up from wereever they are so there parents can check up on them and ring to see if they are ok
if mum and dad are devorced/ not living togeter the other parent can contact the child
there are lots of valid reasons why shouldn't they have a phone?

They are crazy,
They should own none. Was I to be president I would have banned the use of Cell's by under 18's.

violence in school should say it all. you can get them one like a fire-fly which you decide who they can call and who can call them. but since there have been 3 deadly shootings in school plus 3 more shootings (no one died though) and many threats wouldn't you like your child to be able to call you? i got my cousin one since i watch her after school. normally she takes the bus home. The first week of school this year the bus never went to the school to pick the kids up. every one in the office had left for the day(which is why i couldn't get though while i was trying to call) and the kids had no way to call home. fortunately my cousin called me from her cell phone to come and pick her up.

mainly for emergencies. and they have some cheap ones just in case they get lost or broken. one of em is called the firefly by cingular....i have many friends who have bought one for their kids and it works.but it does annoy me when i see some 10 year old with some fancy expensive one like the other day i saw this little girl bragging about having a pink razr....what is wrong with these parents? just because she gives you a puppy face and asks for it doesn't mean they should.

If your child is with you all the time then there is no reason

1. I say for emergency only.
2. If they walk home from school by themselves.
3. If they need to be picked up from a game (you didn't attend)
