I know I learned about this in business school. It's a law related to antitrust that disallows "tying" food purchases to theater ticket purchases but I can't find it anywhere online!

Please tell me if I am wrong or if you know the name of the act or law. Thanks

No, they have a right to disallow you from bringing food from other establishments.

Your question is ambigous. It reads that there is a law that prohibits a theater from requiring you to purchase food once you have a theater ticket. I know of no theater that does that. There are theaters that PROHIBIT patrons from bringing outside food into a theater, and that is legal. (Sports arenas have the same rules).
In the first case, should a theater decide for some unknown reason to have such a policy, they could easily skirt the rule by increasing ticket prices by any said amount, and then giving that amount of food to the patron for FREE. Basically, thats what a Dinner Theatre does.

Are you talking about United States v. Paramount Pictures aka the Hollywood Antitrust Case of 1948? That case had nothing to do with food.

Schine Theatres v. United States had to do actions taken by a theater owner to halt competition.

Maybe you are thinking of that sales and use tax lawsuit where Century had their concession stands open to the public and food sales did not require the purchase of a "seat" so they challenged the use tax they were being charged.

They can't make you buy their food, but as it is a private place they have every right to prohibit you from bringing outside food in. Thats like having the right to go into a resturant, order a coffee and have your own homemade sandwich with it.

There is no name of the act or law, as it doesn't exsist.

You probably could make some claim as to special dietary needs like diabetes or something but if you just wanna bring in your own coke or popcorn...no go.

No, there isn't. In fact most theatres make more money off of their concessions than the entrance price to the movie.

I have never been to or heard of a theater where you HAVE TO buy food.

No, that's how theaters make money, on the food and drinks they sell.
