I agree that you should stay neutral, but at the same time you should state how you feel to each girl on both sides. To the girl that was with the guy (not the gf), you know she was in the wrong. If the tables were turned, she would be pissed that the other girl was walking around with her bf without her being there. That isn't a good friend anyway. She needs to be taught some respect.

Better idea rather than to stay neutral is try to sort things between the two and in a really cool way(no fists allowed) and the only way is let them talk to each other, that is u hav to bring them somehow and don't ask me how but do that and their talking should be such that u ain't no judge, they will start initially by shouting against u, but u hav to calm both of them and then make those two talk and have their points of clearly known to one another and to you too. And by this u maintained ur friendship with those too and u sorted out a fight which is cool and they will b a lot closer to u in future and i had gone through like this and did the same which really helped them out and me too.

If they are both your best friends; they both would not put you in the middle of this situation.

Stay neutral, and if it comes down to it... support both of your friends and not the guy. He sounds like a bit of a jerk to me.

Stay neutral if they make you decide ditch them both because it is unfair if you have to choose
