I have been an NCTJ qualified journalist for over a year now but have had little luck on the job front.

Media Agencies, The Guardian newspaper and publishing house websites have had a few jobs on them but competition is very tough and despite a fairly impressive CV I have had no success.

Unfortunately I can't afford to undertake unpaid work experience.

It seems most of these editorial jobs are given through contacts or via word of mouth.

Any suggestions?

I know you said that you can't afford to take an unpaid placement but you can't afford not to as far as contacts go. You have to get your face out there and until you get a placement you are just waisting your time. In the year that you have been qualified you could have done like 20 placements already. What about the company that you trained with? You may as well go back and ask for a staff writing job. Or you should apply to any publication or agency just to get your foot in the door. Even local and free newspaper/letter. 'Beggars can't be choosers'.

I'm gonna take the pre-entry course in the spring. I'm currently looking for a placement for experience.

Good luck.

Just a suggestion. Check out the most current Writer's Market and submit some articles to some mags. Maybe if you get published, you will make a name for yourself and have a better chance at getting a job with some major 'zines.

Read The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. I suppose the film is the same as the book.
