Danke schön is correct. You need that special character.

No, it isn't. That o needs an umlaut (ö), or it needs to be followed by an e. The umlaut doesn't so much lengthen the o as drop it.

In response to the guy above, it can be either one word or two, depending on how you use it. As a noun (I didn't get so much as a 'thank you.'), it is one word, but as the phrase/exclamation, it is two words: danke schön.

Check out the site below. It is a very handy and thus far very accurate German-English dictionary.

If you cannot put an umlaut over the o in schon typically it is written as schoen to show you know that an umlaut is necessary.

no. the e in the word schoen is used to denote the two dots that would go over the o. it's called an umlaut (spell check that). you have it right but it needs the umlaut over the o. schon, without the umlaut is another word altogether.

It's 'danke schoen' with 2 dots over the o...

"schon" should have an umlaut over the "o", but other than that, it is correct.

"Danke schoen"- the "e" makes the "o" a long "o", and takes place of the umlaut (the two dots) over the "o".
