"Sculpting " wood is a centuries-old art. I still say yes to your question because any new, or modern work, in any medium, if done well, keeps people thinking. How does the work affect you...how does it make you feel...what thoughts come to mind when you see/feel it? I just watched the Burning Man DVD from netflix, and the artists' works at that festival are amazing. There weren't any pieces of furniture that I can recall, but there were several examples of interactive art that were really cool. On the furniture side of art, I have worked with David Moser at Thomas Moser Cabinetmakers in Maine, and his design portfolio includes pieces that I watched him sculpt. I consider David a sculptor, and his pieces definitely are thought-provoking, and interactive as well.
