I will explain how a Converter work in short. Think of two fans facing each other. Turn one on low and the other will begin to turn (first gear) turn to medium the other one will turn faster (second gear). This a simple explain, but, if the first fan not turning or there no fluid to transfer the first fan torque to the second fan it will not turn and thus no gears!!! You may try removing the drain plug from the Converter and see how much fluid drains out. If, there not much fluid the Pump may be out; it bolts in the bell housing area and has your Front Seal in it. This all I know to try.
Austin D has a good point, I have never seen this but, those bolts are short and could have come out, there about 5-6 I think. But, if it these bolts I would assume the truck not start/turn over as the flywheel would be loose from the engine.

Bolts on the flywheel. My 94 Chev made the ticking when I would first start it. But, it tool forever for the tranny to go on it. My friend's dad had a 93, and his went fast when it started ticking.

The bolts probably came out of the torque converter.

well you need to check the torque convertor bolts and make sure they didnt come out. if they did then the truck will start and the convertor wont spin meaning no fluid movement no transmission and do you still hear the ticking noise????

if the torqu converter bolts are good you might have a broken flywheel mine broke in my 83 camaro it ticked right after i replaced the 700r4 pulled it back out what do you know the flywheel was cracked replaced it and it is perfect

check the convertor to flywheel bolts. if they forgot to tighten them and they came out. it would make a ticking noise right before the failure

I had a 700r4 tranny in my '88 Iroc-z, lost reverse, then forward gears. I had it re-built and sold the car. Nobody i spoke with liked those trannys

check the front pump, the ring could be broke in the pump. Unhook cooling line to see if fluid is pumping if no fluid pump is bad. If, this is fine make sure you check the fly wheel.

Check the TV cable. If it's not adjusted right, it could cause some problems.
