It's a little uncomfortable(atleast mine was). If I remember correctly they just use their finger to swipe across the amniotic sac at the opening of your cervix. Sometimes stripping that starts the labor process. Mine just caused a little cramping.
But about 4 hours later my water broke.

I've been through this twice. It's a bit more uncomfortable than a routine PAP test. More so if your cervix is high. The doctor/midwife wipes the coating from the amniotic sac(a.k.a. bag of water). This may start labor. the first time I had it done-with my 2nd child-labor didn't get started for about 16 hours when my water broke. Then they still had to give me Pitocin to get contractions started. The second time-with my 3rd child-labor was already in progress but so minor I dismissed it as Braxton Hicks. However within 4 hrs of my appointment when I had the stripping done I was back at the hospital in full blown labor and @ 10 cm. My advice is that between now and your Monday appointment is: Get your hospital bag packed because you just never know. Good Luck! Happy Labor Vibes to You!

Stripping of the membranes isn't painful, it is just a quick swipe where the uterus and amniotic sac connect, this is done to heighten labor and gets things moving along. In some it may cause slight cramping. Good Luck and Congrats!

I'm 37 weeks too!!! I want my membranes stripped as well...Although my cervix is pretty far far back(PAP smears are soooo uncomfortable) but I'm hoping that my doctor recommends this around my 38th week as well...I'm going to insist!!!!
GOOD LUCK

I found it quite painful and it's not a sure-fire way to go into labor. It's a way to unattach the bag of waters from the cervix.

No it doesn't hurt. They use a device to scrap the insides of the uterus. It helps your delivery go faster. My Dr. did the same.
He even had to break my water. Congrats & good luck!
