Suit or nice blazer and khakis. Wear a tie. IMHO, jeans would fall into the category of "casual".

Define "semi formal" and your circle of who will attend?

Semi is a vague way of saying Tuxedos to T shirts,, but I suggest over dressing rather than the opposite. WE all have the opportunity to "be noticed" in a crowd. How would you prefer to be remembered in the moments you're ON STAGE?

To me,,,SEMI,,,depending on the event and attendees, could be casual,,, or over the top formal.

Think of this and don't stress. Remember the movie "BIG" and the event Tom showed up to, wearing an outlandish baby blue tux? That example is my way of saying,,, HE might have been just as NOTICED,,,OR disregarded, if he had showed up in Boxers and a T shirt.

The old saying,,, "the clothes make the man", is so far from reality,,,unless the other "players" are truly someone you're trying to impress,,,OR be invisible to.

So sayeth Steven Wolf

Semi-Formal wear can go from dress slacks and shirt with tie and sports coat to a nice suit and tie or suit with a nice mock turtleneck instead! That is a great look...also a gorgeous ribbed silk T-shirt under the suit jacket is quite hot! Shoes should be either tie dress or a good loafer! NO SNEAKERS OR WORKBOOTS hahahaha you'd be surprised! Anyway most importantly is you have to be COMFORTABLE in your skin and what you're wearing in order to enjoy yourself so play with what you have and maybe splurge a tad on a great outfit if you can otherwise new accessories, shirt or whatever you can afford.
GO HAVE A BLAST!!!

I live on Nob Hill in San Francisco. When I give a party, "black tie" on invitations means semi-formal. Formal is "white tie". With the black bowtie, wear a dinner jacket or tuxedo and matching trousers plus proper accessories. I see many people are quite ignorant about such matters. My bouncer won't admit people who dress as some answerers advise. Bums are not invited.

Wear nice pants and a jacket. Don't go without the jacket because you'll look like you don't know how to dress.

A nice dress shirt with a tie and nice dark dress slacks would be appropriate.

Wear a suit top and shirt and boardshorts. This way you will be half or semi formal.
