In these uncertain times, one has to be prepared. I keep several cases of freeze dried food, canned foods and bottled water in my basement. Originally, I got it for natural disasters, but I fear I may be using it because of a nuclear attack. Experts say it would actually take about two weeks after nuclear fallout happens for the levels of radiation to get to livable levels again. Most people think it's 10,000 years, it's not. Anyway, you should have enough food and water to survive in your basement for that long. After that, get out and move to an area that was not effected. One more thing, a weapon, preferably a firearm and plenty of ammo should be kept on hand too. After a nuclear attack, the government infrastructure would collapse and we would all be left to our own survival instincts to make it. You would see a side of humanity that you don't want to see so you will need to protect yourself.

Nuclear War. Reminds of the 1960's with the Cuban Missle Crises! There used to be "Fallout Shelter" salesmen that came door to door ! I had a neighbor that bought one and had it "installed" in their backyard. I think it finally filled up with water...anyway.....most of the answers above are probably right. I think the most important thing we can do to survive is to use Common Sense.... Think Preparation NOW ! New Orleans should have taught us that we can not depend on our government to help us. Store food, water, medical supplies, plenty of batteries,a battery powered radio,... actually you can get all of this information from the FEMA website. Maybe even from your local firehouses.

It's possible, because I saw Slim Pickens ride a bomb down in
"Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb " in 1964.
Then I saw him again it a later movie - so he must have survived.

I just read up on this recently. They say the best place to be is in a basement. If you have windows, seal them up as much as possible and put plastic around them.
Keep at least a three day food and water as well as medicine supply for everyone involved, and it should be okay to come out at about three days. But who would want to?

Depends where it is detonated.
And how big it is.
Arguably you might prefer to be killed outright than live on with horrific radiation sickness in a post-apocalyptic world with no safe food or water and a total breakdown of law and order. Or maybe I've just watched too many horror films.

i dont think it's likely...but it's possible i guess. If you did survive, you'll most likely be in VERY bad shape. and if you're not injured..God must like you. lol
