I think the point is to keep the area dry. I have read that frequently re-wetting and touching the umbilical stump can cause it to get irritated or infected and the dryer it is, the sooner it heals. Doc's have lots of different opinions on it. Mine said it wasn't necessary, and not to get it wet. We used the corner of a little alcohol pad if the area looked especially dirty (which was only about 2-3 times) and didn't have any problems.

Bc every few years they like to change the way things are supposed to be done just to keep you on your toes. My doctor said that too but I did it anyway. The umbilical cord popped out a few days later and my daughter is now 19 months old. It can't be that bad for them...just do whatever you like.

I just noticed this too. With our first child they told us to do this at every diaper change and they did not mention it this time (a week ago) when they were giving us the care instructions when we were being discharged from the hospital? I am sort of happy since I really hated messing around with it and feared I would do more harm than good.

Yes, I WAS advised to use alcohol wipes on my daughter's umbilical cord last year. It cleans and dries up all the gunk and helps it heal faster.

i have a six-month old and i had to put rubbing alcohol on it --- the rule was every time i changed a diaper to take an alcohol wipe and clean around it -- it would help to dry it out quicker...don't know what dr you're talking to...

My pediatrician advises us to use rubbing alcohol. The hospital even sent us home with alcohol swabs.
