First do a search of on-line gifts stores. Chances are someone else has the name. If you're starting a website, make sure the URL isn't' taken. There are a million combinations of names to use. Try to be original, don't use the words "gift", or another common word like "shop". Something like " Katy's World of Wonders." Get my point?

1. What are you selling in the gift store? Pick a name that's related to what you are selling.
2. Don't sell everything to everybody. The only successful online stores created by small biz people are niche sites. I.e., if you want to sell dog leashes you really should specialize in one type of dog leash. For example, you could specialize in dog leashes for poodles.
3. You should also go to pixelfast.com/overture and see what people are searching for in your gift categories. Try to pick a word or phrase for your name that has a lot of searches.

The Internet name is the one you really need to focus on - because you want it to be a name that's easily spelled and easily keyed in. Long names that are hard to spell can cause you to lose traffic.
You should really hit the library and get some books on branding - you don't need a textbook, there are plenty of easily readable books that discuss branding and naming. I went through the same thing a few years ago - it was fun but HARD... it's not simply a matter of what sounds good on a Wednesday morning.
Good luck!

First think about who you are targeting. Will your gifts be targeted towards women, corporations, special occassions?
Next, think about what will be unique about your gift stores and products.
Take the answers to the statments above and start brainstorming names that are catchy, based on who will be buying, and can be easily googled.
Be sure you come up with several names in case there is already a website or company with that name.
Good luck!

Here's a resource for you to read...As already suggested, just make sure it's unique and you can secure all URL's & Trademarks associated with the name. Also think about variances...i.e.( CoolGift.com could be CoolGifts.com with an "s" ) If you make sure you get both domains, that prevents someone else from having a business very similar to yours and stealing your customers away.

How about "failure"? 30% of internet businesses make it past the third year. I doubt an internet gift shop is going to fall into the 30% side of the equasion.
