Easier than Saddle Soap and works as well: GOOP Hand cleaner.

Available at Wal-Mart at $0.99 a can. NOT Go-Jo or any other brand. This stuff contains Lanolin, which will soften your leather.
Rub in a small amount to lift dirt, grime and mold. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove. Repeat if needed to remove tough dirt.
After, care for your leather in any way you want. Neatsfoot oil is good, but I haven't used it in years. Use any reliable Waterproofer that you like. I do not reccommend silicone products, because they may interfere with whatever you choose to use later.
Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and a hairdryer are an inexpensive way to waterproof that works well. Will last months before needing to be treated again.

Saddle Soap from a Tack shop. Couple of times should do it. Then apply a light coat of leather oil.

Also, store them when not in use, inside the house, not in the garage where its either freezing or hot.
