But when a calf or lamb is born there is nothing? Does it break off during birth or how is the animal sustained inside its mother? Also what happens with multiple births?

Animals are born directly from a living sac of nutrients. Babies are not.

I believe the animals do have cords as well, mammals I'm sure anyway. As for multiple births. A lot can go wrong with the multiple umbilical cords. There have been many deaths of one or both of the multiples because they weren't getting any nutrients and the other twin was getting too much. Not only can the baby attached to the cord be strangled by it, but so can another baby. That's what happened to Elvis's twin anyway. Luckily my twins didn't have any of those problems.

All animals have umbilical cords, even birds, it is attached inside the egg to the yolk. The cords come off different animals at different times depending on the species.

the cord attaches to the mom so it gets nutrients. usually the animals will chew the cord off, but i wouldnt be surprised that with multiple births some break on their own during the stress of child birth

The baby in the womb is fed thru the use of the umbilical cord from the moment of inception to the birth process
