Plasmodium falciparum (note spelling of the second word) is a protozoan that causes malaria, though not the only one. Malaria kills up to 3 million people every year. P. falciparum is responsible for 90% of those deaths, or up to 2.7 annual fatalities. People become infected by P. falciparum when they are bitten by Anopheles mosquitoes that are themselves carriers of the parasite.
