I think Manchester is lucky to have so many green spaces. There's the Mersey Valley which is just LUSH, then a lot of places like Heaton Park and Alexandra Park and Platt Fields. Then there's a massive field which hosts football and rugby and all that, which feels massive when you walk through it.

Then in Salford you've got the Irwell Valley and Buile Hill round there.

I've been planning my route to uni on my bike and have worked out that every possible route involves going through one park and a stretch of river or canal. For a large city, that's not bad, is it?

More green patches, less revenue. It's become more about the money than the quality of life. But not all cities are like that. There are cities that have 'tree' requirement per square yd.

Because open spaces with grass growing aren't housing people, or supporting building where jobs are. If there were more green areas, the city would be spread out a huge distance to fit in all the businesses and people.

The mayor and the city council did not put money in the budget for this. They probably believe that other other expenditures have a higher priority. These might include preventing and solving crimes, feeding the poor and the homeless, and providing shelter.

Chicago is starting to come around. On some of the tops of skyscrapers they are planting grass. Take a look at the building at 121 N. lasalle st chicago, illinois and you will see grass planted on the roof. Google Maps Satellite view shows it.

You haven't seen the inside of my refrigerator.

First answer is actually on the money. Literally. Undeveloped land generates no revenue, and the unrealized profits are usually too great to resist.

coz every spare space is eaten up by MORE social housing. Its ridiculous - the country is over populated and we're all living like rabbits in little hutches. No wonder people are less tolerant of each other now - we are all too close to our neighbours !!!!
