In fact, i use baby a lot to address my other half. obviously, she's not a baby but i just unconsciously say it. i think it is because i hear it a lot in songs and on T.V. in general. if you are one of the ppl who don't use this term, what do you say instead?

I think form since i was seeing my husband about 2 months later our names did not exsist. You would refer to each other as baby mainly because a child you give affection and love unconditionally thats where the term to be calling loved ones baby

I use bab and babby for family as well because it's a regional thing, like duck and chicken, I suppose bab for me just became babe and babes and other variants of it because of that.

I also call him sausage face and stinky bum, but I think that's to do with my Mum calling my Dad those sort of things, it's not nasty though, it's done in an affectionate way.

Terms of endearment, i.e. 'Baby', 'Sweetheart', 'Hun' are always nicer to use than saying somebody's name. I always call my missus Babe, with her rarely using my name to address me.

I believe that this is due to reassurance and support - we want to know that our partners or friends and even parents love us and want to protect us; hence the use of the word baby. It says to 'I want to care for you and protect you' much as one would for a baby. It does not mean you are a 'screaming little snot rag who sleeps all day and poos itself.' Well, it could I imagine... What a strange and fantastic mistress the English language is!

Hi >
I suppose that I am adult enough in thinking to call my partner by her name, or an abbreviation.
OK. Hazel can turn into "Haze, or Hazey"
But ye Gods, not babe.
Or calling your children "Angel, or Tiger"
This all soungs a tad too Americanised.
Don't like itpersonally.
"Hi Babe" Oh no !!!
It is childlike.
Oh well, just a thought, darlin'

I cll my youngest daughter babygirl - coz she is my baby girl. My husband I call babe. I think its like the protective side in us that makes us do it - kind of like a mothering or fatherly instinct.

I can't even call my husband by his first name. LOL. We refer to each other as babe. We reserve the first name's for fights. I have no idea why. It has been like this for three years. My parents use sweetheart, and my sister just calls her BF Ed, or Edward, his first name.

I don't know, but I kind of like it by the right person... if a stranger or someone I don't know very well addresses me in that way, then I find it offensive!

It depends who I'm talking to; baby, babygirl and princess get reserved for that "special" someone, but to any other females it's whatever springs to mind: doll, trouble, chuckles, bird, freckles, bumface, kitten, treacle...
