My theory is that people were intimidated by black men, and came up with that term? Any other theories or answers?

Why are all you're questions race based? If I were to ask that question I'd be called a racist.

African American's are, at times, referred to as "spooks" because of our dark skin. It is said that our skin can blend with the night making us ghost-like.

But I like your theory; African Americans are referred to as spooks because people are afraid of our strength! Our power "SPOOKS" them......

Someone probably said it a long time ago and it just caught on. Like 'cracker' for a white guy.

probably because they are so dark and can pop out of no where when it is dark outside
