If you mean the guy who created the Strat and Tele (and many other famous guitars), it's normally shortened to just 'Leo Fender', though his full name was 'Clarence Leonidas Fender'.

Well, no, not really. There was a friendly rivalry with Les Paul to see who could produce better instruments. In the early days, Fender based his designs on a solid-body electric owned by Merle Travis, himself a famous guitarist. This guitar was built by Paul Bigsby.

The later creation of the Strat, which I guess is the grand-daddy of Fenders, was mostly his own work, though. Released in 1954, the Stratocaster has been in continuous production ever since, and, along with the Telecaster and the Gibson Les Paul, has helped define the sound of generations of rock, blues, and funk musicians.

I guess you could say he had help and inspiration along the way!
