I have a 5 yr old and a step-daughter who is 12. My husband and I have been going around and around with this issue. I have a real problem with children so young having cell phones. I remember an Oprah when Maria Shriver was on. Oprah could not believe here teenagers did not have cell phones. Maria said, " how can you know who is calling your children." This is so true. Do people not watch TV now days do you see what is happening to children? How can you know who your child is in contact with? Add in a camera phone and who knows what could happen. What images they could receive. If it does not offer any educational purpose then they don't need it. And oh yes, where would your 13 year old be unsupervised at anyways?

I am going to have to say no. There is no reason why they need such a sophisticated type of phone. I have heard from teachers that some schools are banning camera phones because students are using them to cheat on tests.

I think that if a child is going to have a phone it shuold be as basic as possible until they are old enough to foot the bill themselves. I let my 14 year old use mine, but it is more so i can keep in contact with her and for her to use in case of an emergency- nothing else. It has no frills on it, it is just a basic phone.

A girlfriend of mine has a daughter who when she got a phone from her dad, she was 6. the catch to this though was that the phone itself only could dial 4 numbers- 911, her hads house, her dads cell phone and her moms house. Otherwise, service was blocked to any other calls. That is totally reasonable to me.

It all depends on the child, the parent and the circumstances behind the child needing a phone, but to summerize- no a camera phone is not a necessary tool for a child to have.

This is like everything else : it is first and foremost the parents choice. It depends on the maturity of the child and the reason for the phone. I do not agree with these kids who always have thier phones stuck to thier ears. My 13 yr old dau has a cellphone because she is dependable and would have it in case of an emergency. My soon to 15 son doesn't have one, I don't feel he is mature enough . The fact that the phone has a camera on it really doesn't make any difference.

I personally think that anyone under the age of 16 shouldn't get cell phones. I know there are cell phones that are programed with specific numbers like home, 911, and something else that the parents want. I think those are good for the children who ride the bus and or walk home alone. Camera phones aren't good at all for younger children. It is pointless for kids to have such things. They will be abused by children and they shouldn't be allowed in a class room at any point in time! Keep them in lockers and such.

No, I believe that they probably need some sort of communication device starting at age 10, but I'd provide them with the simplest, cheapest phone. They do not need cameras and mp3 players, those features will only promote distraction in school. They should be using the phone in case of emergencies, not as a toy or 'show off' assets. I believe the kid should have a camera phone when they can afford it themselves, at least at age 16.

It depends on their intentions. As an adult, I believe no they shouldn't be allowed. It's not necessary, at that age anyway.

No, i think it will affect their concentration in their studies. They don't exactly need it now, but if they really want it, they can share it with their mum or dad.
by the way how old are you???

No... I don't think so. I am 15 and I don't have one. They are a waste of time and money.
