All of the above are correct, so I thought I would add a helpful hint on HOW to translate from ENGLISH to ALGEBRA...

1) Make an equation substituting a variable for the unknown
2) Remember that the word "OF" translates to "MULTIPLY" in algebra.
3) Remember that "PERCENT" translates to "DIVIDE BY 100" in algebra
4) Remember that "IS" translates to "EQUALS" (=) in algebra
5) After getting the equation, SOLVE for X!

SO...

"6.5%" "OF" "WHAT NUMBER" "IS" "325"
BECOMES:

6.5 / 100 * NUMBER = 325

(I used "NUMBER" above rather than "X" to avoid confusion in typing "TIMES", and I used the * to indicate MULTIPLY)

Solve for "NUMBER":

NUMBER = 325 * 100 / 6.5 = 5000

Hope this better explains HOW to do it, rather than just the ANSWER!!!

Yeah, the thing about these sorts of questions is that what you're really getting into is the beginning stages of algebra, which I suspect you'll be learning more about in a month or two.

It comes down to the relationship between multiplication and division. For instance, when I say that 5 * 8 = 40, I can also say that 40 ÷ 8 = 5, and that 40 ÷ 5 = 8. They're all the same thing.

How does that apply here? Well, when I calculate the percentage of a number (which we call the "base" number), we multiply that percentage -- written as a decimal -- by the base, coming up with the amount. We usually write that as p * b = a.

So, logically, if we are missing the base, but we have the percentage and the final amount, we can divide the final amount by the percentage to get the base. a ÷ p = b.

In your case, that means that b = 325 ÷ 0.065, which comes out to 5,000.

Similarly, if you had the final amount (a) and the base (b) but didn't have the percentage (p), you could divide the amount by the base: a ÷ b = p. For instance, what percent of 800 is 90? p = 90 ÷ 800 = 0.1125, which we'd then write as 11.25% or 11 1/4 %.

Hope that clears it up. Good luck!

Let the required number be x

according to the question
6.5% of x = 325
(6.5 / 100) * x = 325
x = 325 * (100 / 6.5)
x = 5000

Hope it helps :)

Hi there,
Based on your question, i think you can solve this on your own, you are just getting confused.
Just a tip,
you can always start on a simpler example that you know,
eg.
you know that 10% of 100 is 10
so .10 x 100 = 10
100=10/.10

now, on your example
6.5% of b is 325
b= 325/0.065
b= 5000

cheers..
to be honest, i sometimes get confused of the laws of powers myself but when i look at the simpler or basics, i always manage to get the theory of it!
:))
hope you will too :))

let x for the number that we will find...
6.5 (100)=650
650x=325
650x/650=325/650
x=.50
x=.50(100)
x=50

let the no u wanted be x
(x/325)*100=6.5
x=(6.5*325)/100
by solving we get
x=21.125
