Im 25 but I used to trick or treat all the time, every year as a kid. I have 2 kids..5 and 1. my 5 yr old has been 2 times and thats it, her daddy doesnt like halloween and does not celebrate it nor want our kids to. She has been asking about trick or treating and buying punpkins etc. He doesnt like the meaning of halloween and doesnt think any of his kids should celebrate it. I feel bad for my kids not being able to go trick or treating and dressing up. Anyone elses kids not going trick or treating or celebrating halloween? Are there any other things that we can do instead of going out for candy? thanks!

I think it is sad when people take away the simple joys of Halloween from their children. Especially when they might not know the real reasons behind the celebration. I believe your husband should buy a few books and read up on the holiday before he goes on judging it. I know most parents don't like it cause they say it is a celebration of the devil (I don't believe he exists by the way) which is an udder lie made up by the catholic church to get the pagans of olde to convert. Halloween is believed in old cultures to be the one night when the souls of the dead can walk the earth saying their final good-byes to their families, the reason Americans dress up is because it was said that to dress in costumes would confuse the spirits. Candy was not originally handed out either, but came from the offerings of fruits and nuts left out for the spirits. So in truth it is not an evil holiday nor a celebration of evil, but a festival celebrating the life and spirit of loved ones. I hope your husband understand that in America it is all done for fun and to deny this to a child is heartbreaking. I am hurt by people who judge things like this or take things to seriously. I hope he reconsiders and gets more educated in the matter. Blessed Be.

Gosh, how sad for them. I can't imagine anything that was more fun as a child than getting dressed up and going trick or treating. By the way, a child would never know that Halloween was "evil" (which I absolutely disagree with) unless they were told so. Most kids look at Halloween as getting to dress up as their favorite character and getting some candy.
If your man does no want them to go trick or treating, maybe you could start a new tradition like... baking fall shaped cookies, make some fall types of food
from around the country, make some fall crafts for Thanksgiving or maybe even have like a pre Christmas party (all kids love Christmas). Hope this helps you out. Just remember they are your kids too!! Happy Fall!

How upsetting, I cant belive you are just tell him what the kids can and cannot do...aren't you the mom?

If you cant talk him into letting the kids go trick or treating, you will have to do something equally as fun to keep you kids from wanting to trick or treat. Your 5 year old is getting older and will voice their opinion more and more. I would take them out to do something...perhaps dinner at a fun place where they can be kids and not have to sit and behave, maybe take them putt putt golfing, if you have an indoor one, bowling, roller skating.

What about having some of his friends over for a sleep over and have candy there and games to play?

Good luck with this one...i hope your kids dont start to rebel.

What doesn't he like about the meaning of Halloween-- it's a great make-believe time for the kids, a time for fun and joy! Any previous meanings it may have had were lost in time and-- contrary to some people's beliefs-- it was NEVER the devil's birthday!
Well, if he still won't let them go (cough-- spoilsport!) then have them a little dress up party at home. Let them have several costumes and you dress up as different people and stand at different doors in your house giving out candy. Then let them watch a non-scary Halloween type movie (like a Disney one) and eat the candy after some popcorn and stuff. Just good clean fun.

We usually do some fall related things....we put pumpkins out and so on, but don't carve them. It is ok to do fun things for fall. Our friends have a fall festival and we bob for apples and roast marshmallows and have a grand old time. We usually make scarecrows and have a scavenger hunt for fall like things (corn husks, gourds, leaves of different colors).

Also, after halloween when all the costumes go on sale, go buy a few. The kids can still have the fun of dressing up, just without it having to be for halloween. My son (who is 7 now by the way) has about 10 costumes and when he feels like being an elephant for a day or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, we just let him dress up for a day. His friends love to come to our house and play "dress up" even when it is not Halloween at all.

First of all, who the hell is your hubby to tell you what
should be done, don't let any man tell you, your the mom
too and you should have some say in it too...
Hubby use to be this way with me on the first two kids
after I found out how much my kids missed out on, because of his bigamist attitude, I did what all the other
kids did. The next four had normal childhoods like other
kids and I never let him do this with other kids, by the
way he adjusted.
But to answer your question- I would dress the kids up
in simple things I found and the stores in our area
always had a day not on Halloween where the kids could
trick or treating from store to store, that way I didn't
undermine his authority. Also your local churchs do
something to around that time look into baptist churchs
they always have something for kids. I'm sorry he has
to be this way with your kids, but they will resent him for
things trust me...Mom with 6 grown children!!!!

We have not celebrated Halloween for the past several years with our children, and usually, we will go out to dinner or to a movie during the trick or treating. this keeps our kids occupied, and they have lost of fun.

I AM GOING TO BE 25 NEXT WEEK AND I STILL GO TRICK OR TREATING AND PEOPLE STILL GIVE ME CANDY. I THINK ITS ALL ABOUT HAVING FUN, NOT ABOUT ANYTHING EVIL. YOUR KIDS DAD NEEDS TO LIGHTEN UP AND REALIZE IT IS IMPORTANT FOR KIDS TO HAVE FUN! AND YOU ARE THE MOM SO YOU HAVE A SAY TOO, LET YOUR KIDS BE KIDS WHILE THEY STILL CAN.

I'm sorry that they will not be going for trick or treating. I would take them to Chucky Cheese or something like that.

Or you can take them yourself without hubby and have fun with your kid.

Whatever your choice best of luck
