Pretty much all of the old Ealing Comedies (lavender hill mob etc) have london featured prominently...also old Michael Caine movies (except Get Carter which is set in newcastle) as he is very proud of the city.

Films such as "mona lisa" (or in fact anything starring Bob Hoskins) show the grittier side of london. But for the definitive list have a look at the internet movie database london list...

http://www.imdb.com/List?endings=on&&locations=London,%20England,%20UK&&heading=18;with+locations+including;London,%20England,%20UK

for over 4000 movies and tv programmes set in london.

As a rule of thumb - avoid anything american though as they tend to be mockups of london rather than actually london itself...

...oh yeah and don't forget both "39 steps" (the 70s version) and V for Vendetta for iconic representations of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament.

I just went to see Anthony Minghella's new film Breaking And Entering last night and that is set in London (North London mostly). Other films with a London backdrop/story include Closer, Mary Poppins, Notting Hill, Four Weddings And A Funeral, Kidulthood, Match Point, About A Boy and of course Harry Potter - the magical station is actually Kings Cross!
