I will repost my answer to a similar question.

Personally I don't. I think it was taken and made a racist symbol by blacks just to have something else to complain about. Slavery was not the cause of the civil war but merely a side interest. Keep in mind people can take any symbol they want and suit it to fot their needs. Just look at how the blacks have now turned the star of David into a gang sign. Somehow I don't think thats how the Jews intended it to be used either. They still have pride in their symbol though and just ignore what the blacks have done with it. So should we. States rights is still an issue today's government is struggling with. I don't see an end to it but think it should be flown and worn with pride, If the stars and bars offends people they need to read a history book.

Just leave symbols for the simple minded.

I refuse to apologize for what my nation did to become great. My ancestors and I never owned slaves. The blacks today were never slaves. They can wer their African colors all day long, the colors of the people that caught and sold slaves to whites. That is the flag they should be upset with(the red, green, and black).
**NEW CONTENT**
The truth of the matter is they should be glad they are not in Africa where slavery is still practiced today, famine is rapant, AIDS kills everyone, civil war is a fact of everyday life, female genital mutilation is a right of passage, you could become part of the food chain, you don't have to work for a living you have to work just to stay alive, people still live in straw huts..the list goes on and on the blacks in America should be happy their ancestors were brought over here against their will or not. I know I wouldnt want to live in that shitpit.

Fact: the stars and bars was only a battle flag...The Confederate
States flags, there were several, were mostly white.
Fact: The Union had more slave markets and breeding camps than the south because it was good money.
Fact: The Dred-Scott Decision was the final straw that caused N. Carolina to secede from the Union. It was not until later that the rest of the southern states seceded.
Fact: Not until the Emancipation Proclamation was the war actually "said" to be about slavery.
Fact: It is only all the Damn Yankees that have stirred up all the latest hatred in the south.
Fact: Why can't all people learn to get along and quit re-hashing 150 year old lies!

Regardless of if it is about slavery or not, were slavery was practiced, or if it should 'mean' slavery, the flag is offensive to some, so, maybe you shouldn't fly it. Have you ever thought of why you fly it? Is the fact that some people don't like it a possible, small, tini-tiny reason? The fact of the matter is, there will always be dissention amoung different peoples. My skin wil always be brown, and yours will always be tan. I personally don't like the flag, but I'm not gonna go burning any. I would just appreciate it if people would not act as if I'm silly for not liking it.

most people are uneducated as to what the confederate union stood for...slavery was practiced on both sides . to me the confederate flag stands for a simple way of life, free from the hand of big brother. all the southern states wanted was an end to taxation without representation. the whole confederate flag as a symbol of just slavery was a ploy by the union to degrade the south and to sway the unsure to side with them...today it is a a common stigma that anyone who flys a rebel is predjudice and an uneducated redneck. i am neither of those thing and the stars and bars fly proudly around here...i neither like or respect anyone who would ever think that keeping a human being against their will is acceptable..i would think that lincolns white house had black servants...and the slave owners in the south werent all evil torturous madmen..its a realization that both sides were wrong...only the south didnt want to be taxed by an american government in which they had no representation or say so in..im babbling---sorry

OMG! I can't believe you've got the guts to say it. I agree a hundred per cent. To me, the Confederate flag signifies the south, not slavery. Besides, none of my ancestors ever owned slaves. People just need to get over it.

Pinelake makes good points historically.

This one...Fact: Not until the Emancipation Proclamation was the war actually "said" to be about slavery. ... is especially interesting because the Proclamation freed slaves ONLY in the states in rebellion. Union states and border states were not affected. While Lincoln disliked the idea of slavery he felt it was constitutionally protected and could not be abolished in the STATES. His fight was to try to avoid slavery in NEW states as they were admitted. He personally felt that the black race was inferior and would never be able to live in the United States as freemen sucessfully. He did not intend or forsee that blacks would vote, hold office or be any part of the government or of white society. Had he lived to oversee reconstruction his plan was to deport all blacks to South America.
(Please note I DO NOT feel this way myself but am reporting what I have learned after extensive study of the War and of Lincoln)

I'm from the South, and the only reason why people are so ignorant is because of the way that they think about how oh we should have won the war, which isn't true in my opinnion, but there are so many ignorant people down here that they still think that if they fly the flag another war will start over the same subject and then we will win, that will never happen.

I agree with you. Slavery continued in the northern states after the Civil War ended. So, that means that the Civil War could not have been about slavery. People choose to associate it with slavery because of the actions of the KKK. It is unfortunate because this puts a large population in a category of bigotry simply because they wish to celebrate their history.

The problem with the CF certainly started with the civil war, but it was exascerbated many times by the Klan. Many blacks were hung by those carrying the banner of the Confederate Flag, even in the recent past.
