As everyone has already said, Buddleia (butterfly bush) and Sedum (Autumn Joy) are both excellent at attracting butterflies. Look for other plants with similar flower types (small flowers, clustered heads). Those both provide nectar for the adult plants, but if you really want the butterflies to stick around, you need plants that the caterpillars eat, too. It really depends on the kind of butterflies in your area, so check out some websites specific to your location.

There are other things you need to do, however. First, they need a water source. Try putting out a shallow dish (like the base of a flower pot) full of sand or small stones, and keep it moist. Second, they need sun, but also need to be sheltered from the wind.

The websites below should help you.

In addition to the butterfly bushes, I have great luck with zinnias, coneflowers and liatris for attracting butterflies. To keep more butterflies in your garden, plant host plants so that they will reproduce in your yard. Each species of butterfly has it's own host plant, so find out what butterflies are in your area and then do a search to find out what it's host plant is. You can also attract some butterflies by using rotting fruits, and nectar feeders.

A buddleia's what you need.

If you look around you should be able to get one free....the seeds blow around and root anywhere, even in old walls. A beautiful bush when it's flowering but needs upkeep as 1. it grows very fast and 2. you have to dig out those unwanted seedlings of course! The good thing is that even if you prune it almost to the ground it steamrollers right back again!

Hope you find something nice for your garden!

A perennial called Verbena Bonariensis is a good one to attract butterflies, plant them about 12" apart, they look better when you have a few altogether rather than one here and there. They have purple flowers on long stem's.

Milkweed is great for attracting butterflies. So is Lantana. In the US both are cheap weeds. Don't know about growing them in the UK.
