DO NOT CUT BACK A CLIMBING ROSE. A climber is different than a BUSH. Leave it on a trellis if it is on one. You can wrap in burlap for extreme cold and windy locations. Or you can remove from trellis and lay on ground loosley tied together each vine and cover with soil. If you do prune, it is best to do in spring and for the winter, not before the first frost.

Hi. I have a Don Quan climbing rose. This is it's second year. So far the only thing I've done is put a little extra mulch around the base. It hasn't gotten big enough to prune yet, but from what I've read, fall seems to be the best time to do that.

For more info on winterizing, check out this article:

Hope this helps!

Update: I did some more digging and found this info. By the way....fall doesn't seem like the best time to prune. Glad you ask this question!

Prune the roses down far enough to cover the plant with a bushel basket, rose cap, etc. Whatever kind of container you have to cover the plant. Roses dont do well over the winter unless you are in a mild climate. Mulch heavily before covering. If you are in a mild climate, pruning woulldnt be necessary. You could just cut back dead canes and mulch.

Roses are plenty much less annoying to look after than you will think of. you do no longer could do plenty in any respect to coach for iciness on your zone. If the rose is root grafted locate the factor the place the graft became made and make useful it rather is roofed with mulch. do no longer do this in the previous the 1st no longer common frost because of the fact critters, like mice, would nest in the mulch and consume the bark on the rose shrub, yet after the 1st no longer common frost they'd have already gotten their nests. Come spring fertilize and prune off any ineffective wood.

You're supposed to cut back rose bushes every fall. You can put any type of bucket over the top of the bush but set something heavy on top of it so the wind doesn't blow it over.
