Because "people" is like plural already. I think I remember from primary school that my English teacher told us it was wrong. Now this word "peoples" appears in university texts... I'm really confused.

"Peoples" is indeed the correct usage in certain scholarly contexts.

For example, "indigenous peoples" is the preferred term when referring to MANY groups of indigenous people across the globe (Native American, Aboriginal Australian, etc.). "Peoples of Asia" is the preferred term when referring to Chinese people AND Korean people AND Japanese people AND Vietnamese people, etc.

Basically, "peoples" is the proper term to use when referring to many different groups of people at the same time.

In the case of China it is most likely a problem in making an idiomatically correct translation from Chinese and the Peoples was just accepted as most convenient and functional. Also, there can be a plural of people! The word peoples is corrctly used if you are indicating that there are several ethnic groups of people. It is just like fish. Fishes refers to more than one species. There are many collective nouns like these in English.

Yes, there is such a word as "peoples"

"People" is the plural for person.

"Peoples" is the plural for the SINGULAR noun "people", which means "nation" or "ethnic group".

It is possible to say, "We are one people," or, "The French are one people." However, when you talk about more than one nation, you can say that there are multiple peoples.

I always thought it wasn't correct... but i would just trust the text and not worry about that, just read it for what you're supposed to read it for.

I think "peoples" is wrong. Maybe they just forgot punctuation like, "people's"? I don't know. I have never seen it in a text book. I have heard some rather uneducated people use it though.
